But the Taniwha can spare time for a quick kōrero paki - a funny story, that he heard when he was a little taniwha:

One day a baby was born with no eyelids, perfectly healthy otherwise, just didn't have any eyelids.

The mum was pretty concerned that when he grew older and he went to school, that the other kids would tease him for having no lids. So the mum and dad met with the doctor to discus what could be done.

The doctor said “ Don't be so worried about this, there is a medical proccedure which has become quite normal – you see what we do is wait till the boy has grown to about 3 or 4 years old and then we circumcise him, then, we use the foreskin that is cut off to make him a pair of eyelids.”

The mother took a minute to think about this and then said to the doctor “But Doctor,  won't that make him 'Cock-eyed?”

The doctor replied “Try not to think of it like that – in cases like this we prefer to focus on the positive things, just think of the 'fore-sight' he'll have”
